Hey! How are you doing? As you know, my name is Foster.
So, welcome to Day 1 of Sound School! Sound School 3.0 to be exact.
Again, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am that you are participating in Sound School. We really believe it is going to help you so much with your English and we cannot wait to start working with you.
So, today, I just wanted to clarify a few things and let know about a few of the things we learned since we started doing pronunciation courses for Brazilians almost 2 years ago.
At Ingles Nu E Cru, we always try to be as transparent as possible. So in the spirit of full transparency, here are some of the most important things that I have learned over the years.
First and foremost, pronunciation is physical & pronunciation takes time
So please, please, please, never forget that pronunciation is a physical activity.
Always think about pronunciation like riding a bike or learning how to play a sport or a musical instrument.
At first, everything is going to feel really weird and you are going to be embarrassed. We are going to teach you new things, new ways of moving your mouth and you will probably be pretty bad at this in the beginning.
But with time and consistent training, things will start to click and your English will dramatically improve. With pronunciation, like practice makes permanent. If you practice the right things, you will improve, but be patient - things will start slow and then will get fast really quick. This is by design. In the past, we have not paid enough attention to the fundamentals and our students really suffered from it.
My role as a teacher is to educate and keep you motivated
I cannot transplant my English into your brain, but I can give you the tools so can learn all by yourself forever.
So, I want you to think about one of the great teachers you had.
What subject did they teach you? Why did you like them?
In my case, my favorite teacher of all time, the man who really changed the trajectory of my life, was a Medieval Spanish Teacher. I did not want to take his class, it was simply a requirement in University.
But because he was so passionate and motivated, I am still fascinated by medieval Spain and Portugal, and that is one of the big reasons I am talking to you from Portugal today. Because I am still so curious about these old Medieval castles and everything like that.
So, by the end of the course. The goal is not for you to speak perfect English with a perfect accent. Of course, you will improve a lot in these areas, but the real goal is to give you all off the practical tools and tips that you need to consistently get better by yourself forever.
And on top of that, to give you the motivation so that you will always want to keep practicing and improving. Because at the end of the day, learning a new language is a life-long journey. It is not something you do for a couple of months and then stop.
Ok, so I think that is enough of me talking for today. Again, I am super excited and truly humbled that you are allowing me to guide you through this beautiful adventure of learning more about English and pronunciation.
In the next couple of videos, we will tell you the backstory of Ingles Nu E Cru and talk more about our philosophy of learning languages.
See you guys soon. Much love, Foster.
